The Delaware State Police arrested 34-year-old Kelvin Giron-Brand, of Paterson, New Jersey, for a felony theft of fuel that occurred at a New Castle Wawa yesterday afternoon.
On January 23, 2024, at approximately 3:07 p.m., troopers responded to the Wawa located at 7 E. Commons Boulevard in New Castle for a report of a theft of fuel. Upon arrival, troopers made contact with the suspect, identified as Kelvin Giron-Brand, at a fuel pump in a white Ford van. In the ensuing investigation, troopers learned that multiple Wawa gas stations have been experiencing a trend of diesel fuel thefts in which the suspects install a device (pictured below) to the fuel pump that manipulates the pump to dispense a large volume of fuel for a fraction of the cost. The fuel pump used by Giron-Brand was inspected and the device was recovered. Troopers also located multiple containers in Giron-Brand’s work van that contained over $1,700’s worth of fuel, for which Giron-Brand had paid less than $20.
Giron-Brand was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 2, where he was charged with the following crimes:
- Shoplifting Over $1,500 (Felony)
- Possession of Burglar Tools or Instruments Involving Disabling Security Systems (Felony)
- Conspiracy 2nd Degree (Felony)
Giron-Brand was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $14,000 secured bond.
