USPS wants customers to be aware of package mailing deadlines for the holiday season

For residents of Northern Delaware, several post office locations will offer extended holiday hours. This includes the Wilmington Main Post Office at 3911 Concord Pike and Rodney Square Station located at 500 Delaware. No post offices in Kent and Sussex County are expected to have expanded hours.

“The Wilmington Main Post Office and Rodney Square will be open on Sunday, December 12 and 19 from 10 AM until 1 PM while the Rodney Square will also be open an additional hour on Saturday, December 11 and 18,” Paul F. Smith of the Eastern Area Office of USPS said. “Expanded hours are part of the postal service’s preparation for the anticipated higher delivery demands of the 2021 holiday peak season.

According to Smith, 112 new package sorting machines have been installed since April, part of the Delivering for America plan that will have the organization investing over $40 billion over the next ten years. The new machinery gives the postal service the capacity to process over four million packages each day.

“The Delivering for America plan also includes the hiring of 40,000 seasonal employees for the 2021 holiday season,” Smith said. “In addition, USPS hiring efforts included the conversion of 63,000 pre-career employees into career positions and the hiring of more than 60,000 pre-career employees.”

Smith also reminded customers of shipping deadlines for packages. Retail ground service packages should be shipped by December 15 while first class mail, such as Christmas cards, should be sent by December 17. The deadline to send Priority Mail is December 18 while the deadline for Priority Mail Express is December 23.
