On Monday, February 22, Dr. Kate Marvel, Supervisor of Secondary Student Learning, provided Milford School District Board of Education information on the progress students were making in Career and Technical Education majors. Dr. Marvel explained that since most of these programs were normally provided with hands-on learning, the COVID-19 pandemic has required that the district make some adjustments.
“In the spring, we will have 25 of our School of Agriscience members at the high school competing in different contests at the Virtual Delaware FFA State Spring CDE contest,” Dr. Marvel said. “In addition, four members attended the state conference, which was held virtually, to learn about leadership, the importance of promoting agriculture and goal setting. The MCA and MHS Agriscience department is preparing for a busy spring with the upcoming spring plant sale and the arrival of livestock animals.”
The entire DECA team placed for nationals for the coming year, placing in Automotive Services Marketing, Business Law and Ethics, Financial Consulting and Services, Principles of Finance, Professional Selling, Restaurant and Food Service Management as well as Sports and Entertainment Marketing.
“I especially want to point out that America Ocegueda placed for nationals in Hospitality and Tourism Professional Marketing,” Dr. Marvel said. “This is our first year having this program of study and our student placed first in this competition. We are very excited to see where this goes and again, this will be a virtual event where we think our students will shine.”
Dr. Marvel stated that 16 students who are in the School of Health Sciences will compete in the Health Occupations of America (HOSA) competition in early March. Like other competitions, this will be virtual with students competing with other southern division schools. The top three competitors in each division will compete at the state level at the end of the month.
“This year our spring showcase will replace our drama performance,” Dr. Marvel said. “I am very impressed with the team that has come up with an alternative to the performance. They have created an opportunity where students perform their dream performance. Later in March, they will come into the auditorium on an individual basis in order to film their solo performance on stage with sound and light but following all safety guidelines. We will then edit the clips together and make a full showcase for our student performers. Our School of Art and Design has been busy with virtual All State Ensembles this year and we should soon have a list of students who are participating this school year.”
The School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math at MCA have students in the technology exploratory class competing in a variety of Technology Student Association (TSA) statewide competitions. This includes building and racing a solar car, taking and editing digital photographs, designing promotional materials as well as creating their own working online video games. The MHS computer science program is participating in a Department of Education pilot with Zip Code Wilmington, working with Tyrell Hoxter via Google Meets to receive instruction in a proprietary Learning Management System.
“We are excited to announce that Molly Chorman, an instructor in the School of Education and Career Studies program, along with three other teacher academy instructors across Delaware will work closely with the Department of Education Institutions of Higher Education and Educators Rising,” Dr. Marvel said. “Molly will receive professional development and become a catalyst of teacher academy curriculum changes to ensure we are offering a program of study that is inclusive to all. The goal of this program is to create culturally responsive future educators who reflect the diverse demographics of Delaware classrooms.”
Dr. Marvel also announced that, leading up to spring break, the district plans to promote CTE teachers and programs of study on social media platforms in an effort to make students who are signing up for classes next year aware of the options available to them.
