MILFORD — The Music School of Delaware’s Milford Branch is now enrolling students for its fall semester, offering private lessons, group classes, and early childhood programs designed to nurture both musical and academic growth.
Educators at the school emphasize that music lessons extend far beyond performance skills. Research shows that learning an instrument strengthens memory, improves focus, and supports language and reading development.
“Music can be transformative for children—not just artistically, but cognitively, emotionally, and socially,” said Mary Jane Vanvestraut, director of community and operations at the Music School of Delaware. “When children learn rhythm and pitch, they begin to recognize patterns that are also essential to reading. It’s one of the most powerful ways to connect music and literacy.”
The Milford Branch offers one-on-one instruction in more than 30 instruments and voice, including piano, guitar, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, and more. Group classes are also available for beginners and advanced students, while early childhood programs starting at 16 months introduce children to music through movement, rhythm, and play.
How to Enroll
Families can browse offerings online and submit an inquiry form through the school’s website to be matched with an instructor. Students may also schedule a 30-minute sample lesson to find the right fit before committing. Registration can be completed online through the student portal or with printed forms, and the school will confirm lesson times once enrollment is finalized.
Scholarships and Financial Assistance
The Music School of Delaware makes financial assistance available to ensure that every child has an opportunity to experience music. Scholarships are awarded based on need, with the goal of making lessons accessible to families of all backgrounds.
“Every child deserves the chance to discover the joy of music,” Vanvestraut said. “We never want cost to be the reason a student cannot pursue lessons. That’s why financial aid is such an important part of our mission.”
Located at 23 North Walnut Street in Milford, the branch serves families across Kent and Sussex counties. As the only statewide, accredited community music school in the U.S., the Music School of Delaware also reaches students in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland.
