DEWEY BEACH —The 14th annual Dewey Goes Pink event will kick off on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 11 am in Dewey Beach, bringing thousands of participants to Dewey Beach for a day of running, walking, live music, and fundraising. Organizers expect another sellout crowd of more than 5,000 participants, continuing the event’s growth and strong community support. Since its founding, Dewey Goes Pink has raised over $1.9 million for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC).

Proceeds support DBCC’s outreach, education, and support services in Sussex County, with a focus on breast health awareness, early detection, and access to care.

The event was founded by local business owners Steve Montgomery (The Starboard) and Adam Howard (Body Shop Fitness Center), both of whom have personal connections to breast cancer. Montgomery’s mother lived with breast cancer for 25 years before passing away in 2010. Howard’s mother was also diagnosed around the time the event was created.

“My mom was so excited about all of the advancements being made in breast cancer treatment,” Montgomery said. “Before she passed, I asked to take over some of the fundraising.  She agreed, but asked me to focus on the local Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition as they take care of our own here in Delaware.”

Montgomery and Howard joined forces to create the first Dewey Goes Pink, anchored by a fun walk and 5K, along with food, live music, and community fundraising. The event has grown significantly since then.

“While we knew The Starboard could host a fun party, we never imagined the event would grow as large as it has,” Montgomery said.

Transparency and Local Impact

Organizers say transparency is a priority and that every dollar raised is tracked and published. According to Montgomery, this commitment has helped build trust and long-term support.

“We publish every dollar that comes in and goes out so everyone can see exactly how their donations are making an impact,” he said.

Dewey Goes Pink has grown far beyond its original scope, becoming one of the largest breast cancer fundraising events in the state. While the fundraising is critical, Montgomery said the event also serves as a gathering point for people to connect and support one another.

“I can honestly say that seeing everyone enjoying themselves here in Dewey Beach is what I love more than anything,” says Montgomery. “We sell out every year, and it’s always a pleasure seeing how many smiles we help put on the faces of loved ones, families, and friends.”
