DOVER — Bayhealth’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) Simulation Center has been awarded full accreditation in Teaching/Education and Systems Integration by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), marking a major milestone in the organization’s ongoing efforts to advance clinical education and patient safety. This distinction, earned in 2025, solidifies Bayhealth’s reputation as a regional leader in simulation-based medical training across central and southern Delaware.
Previously holding provisional accreditation since 2019, Bayhealth’s simulation program has now met all rigorous standards set by SSH, demonstrating excellence in areas such as program management, curriculum development, research, and continuous quality improvement.
“This reaccreditation is a proud moment for our team and a reflection of the high standards we maintain in simulation-based education,” said Dan Wagner, GME Simulation Lab Specialist. “The center plays a critical role in helping learners develop the skills and confidence they need to provide exceptional care.”
A State-of-the-Art Learning Environment
Located on Bayhealth’s Kent Campus, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) Simulation Center spans 10,000 square feet and is designed to offer a highly immersive and realistic educational experience. The center features a wide range of advanced simulation and robotic technologies that support experiential learning for medical students, residents, nurses, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
The facility includes:
A classroom and conference space
Fully equipped emergency bay and operating room
Multiple debriefing rooms
A virtual reality training suite
High-fidelity, full-body patient mannequins capable of simulating trauma and critical care scenarios
Training sessions are supported by a robust audiovisual and software system that captures performance for immediate feedback and evaluation.
“This is a safe environment where people can practice, make mistakes, and improve,” Wagner said. “Simulation training helps strengthen communication, decision-making, and teamwork, which ultimately leads to better outcomes for our patients.”
Enhancing Teamwork and Patient Safety
The Simulation Center serves as a collaborative hub for hands-on learning, allowing care teams to work together in simulated clinical environments that mirror real-world pressures. This team-based training helps enhance coordination, build trust, and improve responses to complex medical situations.
Bayhealth’s mission through the center is to support simulation and experiential education that fosters a culture of safety, quality, and inquiry. Its vision is to create a learning environment that contributes to improved patient care and strengthens the health of the surrounding community.
With this full accreditation, Bayhealth continues to demonstrate leadership in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals to deliver safe, high-quality care in an ever-evolving medical landscape.
