A Dover woman who only recently began trying her luck with the lottery is now a millionaire after winning $1 million in the Oct. 22 Powerball drawing.
The 51-year-old winner, who works in promotions supervision, bought the ticket at Harrington Raceway and Casino on West Rider Road in Harrington. Her ticket matched all five white balls — 18, 37, 52, 54 and 60 — to secure the second-tier prize. The Powerball number for the drawing was 12.
According to the Delaware Lottery, the woman began playing about six weeks ago “for fun,” typically purchasing three quick-pick tickets at a time. This was her first time winning a prize of any kind.

After scanning the ticket and realizing she had matched five numbers, she said she was in disbelief. She immediately told her father, the first person she shared the news with. She has not yet decided how she’ll use the winnings.
“A $1 million Powerball win is something truly special,” said Helene Keeley, director of the Delaware Lottery. “We’re so happy for our winner and love sharing in the excitement of moments like this. We encourage all our players to keep the fun in playing by doing so responsibly.”
The woman claimed her prize at Delaware Lottery Headquarters on Oct. 30.
Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m., with tickets sold statewide until 9:45 p.m. on drawing nights. Prizes range from $4 up to jackpot amounts that regularly climb into the hundreds of millions. To find a Delaware Lottery retailer near you, visit Where To Buy | Delaware Lottery.
