Milford native is Sussex County’s first independent for the 2026 election, reflecting a growing trend in local politics.
MILFORD, Del. — Julie Morris, a Milford native and licensed clinical social worker, has announced her candidacy as an Independent for Delaware’s 36th House District, adding a unique dimension to the race. Morris joins incumbent Republican Representative Bryan Shupe and Democrat Madeline McDaniel in what is now a three-way contest—Sussex County’s first independent bid of the 2026 election.
Morris, who was born and raised in a working family—her father a boilermaker and her mother a nurse at Milford Hospital—has deep local roots. Her family ran ABC 123 Daycare, and her grandparents operated Brownie’s Bait and Tackle on Route 36.
A licensed clinical social worker, Morris emphasized her firsthand experience with the impact of state-level decisions, particularly in healthcare. “I’m running as an Independent because our district deserves practical leadership focused on responsible growth, strong infrastructure, protecting farmland, and supporting working families,” she said.
Morris’s entry highlights a growing trend of independents entering local races across the county, tapping into voters seeking alternatives to traditional party lines.
Meanwhile, Rep. Bryan Shupe remains a respected figure in District 36. A former Milford mayor and entrepreneur, Shupe has championed local healthcare expansion, educational transparency, and infrastructure accountability. His focus on community development has earned broad support.
There are several Democrats rumored to be running for the office. At this time, the candidate names are not confirmed.
As the race evolves, the 36th District offers voters a variety of choices—all three candidates bringing deep community ties and a commitment to public service.
