LEWES, Del. — The Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Chapter is inviting caregivers from across Sussex County to attend its annual Dementia Caregiver Symposium on Tuesday, May 12, offering practical tools, expert guidance, and peer support at a time when the demands on caregivers continue to rise statewide.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Lewes Public Library. It will feature a mix of educational sessions, panel discussions and resource-sharing opportunities designed for those caring for loved ones living with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.
Organizers say the goal is to provide real-world strategies caregivers can apply immediately — from managing burnout to navigating evolving care needs.
“Supporting someone living with dementia comes with both unique challenges and meaningful rewards,” said Erica Holmes, Programs Manager for the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Chapter. “This symposium gives caregivers practical information they can use right away, while also connecting them with others who understand the journey.”
Growing Demand for Caregiving Support
The symposium comes as new data underscores the increasing burden on Delaware families.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2026 Facts and Figures report:
- 37,000 Delaware residents are serving as unpaid family caregivers, up from 32,000
- Caregivers are providing 67 million hours of unpaid care annually, a significant jump from 47 million
- The estimated value of that care has reached $1.6 billion, up from $1.1 billion
- Delaware ranks 2nd nationally in average hours of care provided per caregiver
The data highlights both the scale of caregiving in the state and the critical role unpaid caregivers play in the healthcare system.
What Caregivers Will Learn
The May 12 symposium is structured to address both the emotional and practical sides of caregiving, with sessions including:
- Compassion in Action: Exploring approaches like NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) and doll therapy
- Senior Care Solutions: Guidance on navigating care options and planning
- Caregiving Uncovered: A panel discussion with caregivers sharing personal experiences, followed by Q&A
- Caregiving and Technology: Tools and innovations designed to support daily care
- Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease: Medical insights into the progression and management of the disease
Speakers include healthcare professionals from Beebe Healthcare, senior care consultants, and local caregiving advocates.
Building Community Around Care
Beyond education, organizers emphasize the importance of connection.
Caregivers often operate in isolation, and events like this are designed to create a support network where individuals can share experiences, ask questions and learn from one another.
The event is free, though registration is required. Light refreshments will be provided.
