Bayhealth’s Heart & Vascular Institute has opened a new Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Clinic, offering what the health system says is the first dedicated heart failure follow-up program in Kent and Sussex counties. The clinic operates from Bayhealth Cardiology locations in Dover on Governors Avenue and in Milford on Sussex Avenue.

The program focuses on the critical period immediately after a patient is discharged from the hospital following a heart failure episode—a time when the risk of complications and readmission is highest. Patients diagnosed with heart failure will be scheduled for a rapid follow-up visit at the clinic, where they are evaluated by both a cardiology specialist and a pharmacist. The team works together to adjust medications, monitor for early signs of worsening symptoms and provide guidance to help patients manage their condition at home.

The clinic also includes access to IV diuretic therapy, a treatment used to remove excess fluid and ease strain on the heart. This therapy is typically given in hospitals, but offering it on an outpatient basis may help some patients avoid a return to the emergency department.

“We are committed to expanding access to the specialized care our community needs right when they need it most,” said Chief of Medical Cardiology and Interventional Cardiologist Aditya Sharma, MD, MBA, FACC, FSCAI. “This clinic strengthens the continuity of heart failure care by ensuring patients receive rapid follow-up, coordinated support and treatments that can prevent avoidable hospitalizations and improve outcomes. It’s an important step forward in advancing the quality and accessibility of cardiac care at Bayhealth.”

Bayhealth officials say the clinic is part of a broader effort to enhance cardiovascular care across the region.
