Beebe Healthcare has installed a new 1.5 Tesla MRI system at its Lewes Campus, a $1.3 million upgrade the hospital says will improve diagnostic capabilities and reduce wait times for patients.

The purchase was fully funded through the Beebe Medical Foundation, which attributed the investment to ongoing contributions from local residents and businesses.

“When leadership expressed an imminent need for a new MRI, the Foundation was able to answer quickly, thanks to grateful patients and community partners who have made philanthropic gifts to the hospital over time,” said Kay Young, Executive Director of Development for Beebe Medical Foundation. “Our ability to make this investment truly underscores the value of community support, and we are so grateful for those who choose to give back, empowering us to deliver excellent care throughout Sussex County.”

Beebe’s diagnostic imaging team installed the equipment last week, just ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Hospital officials say the new unit will allow for a wider range of imaging exams while shortening scan times. The system also features a detachable table designed to make transfers easier for patients who arrive on stretchers.

“The resolution of the images produced by this machine is superior,” said Josh Wyatt, MBA, RT(R), CRA, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Beebe. “It is no secret that the equipment we need to do our jobs and provide the best possible care for patients is expensive. It is amazing to know the hospital was able to make this investment in large part because of the support we have received from members of our community.”

Hospital leaders say the upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to modernize diagnostic technology as patient volumes continue to grow across Sussex County.
