One of the most unique ways in this area to get close to nature is by doing so on the water. Several parks surrounding Milford offer options for canoeing, kayaking and boating with some even renting the equipment you need to traverse the many creeks, rivers and waterways in Milford.
Killens Pond has canoes, kayaks and pedal boats available for rent. The rentals are available from 10 AM to 6 PM seven days per week from mid-June through mid-August. After mid-August and until mid-October, rentals are available 10 AM to 6 PM on weekend holidays only. The rentals are not available from mid-October until April. Kayakers, canoers and boaters are welcome to bring their own boats and launch them at Killen’s Pond at any time, however.
At the pond, boaters can see nesting bald eagles perched in the pines or circling overhead. Travel the pond toward the Murderkill River and see the small stand of bald cypress trees. More information about the pond can be found at the Nature Center which is open year round from 8 AM until sunset.
Although they do not offer canoe, kayak or boat rentals, Abbott’s Mill is another area that many find enjoyable in a watercraft. The pond has a public boat ramp for kayaks, canoes and motorboats with parking available. Fishing is permitted in the pond and a fishing permit is required for anyone between 16 and 64.
The DuPont Environmental Center also offers kayaking and canoe adventures. On August 4, a Family Canoe trip is planned from 11:30AM to 2:30 PM where families can view herons, beavers, eagles and more. The cost is $35 per person for those eight and older. Registration is available online.
The Mispillion River also offers excellent viewing of wildlife for those with their own watercraft. There is a soft launch floating dock behind Arena’s with a city parking lot in front of the building. Another ramp is available behind the old police station on Northeast Front Street.
Currently, there are no locations that rent canoes or kayaks in Milford, so those who wish to enjoy the Mispillion must provide their own watercraft. It is possible to canoe or kayak from downtown Milford to the entrance of the Delaware Bay. The trip takes between five and six hours and there are not many locations to stop along the way, so be prepared to have water, sunscreen and a hat. There is a state boat ramp located on Cedar Creek near the entrance to the bay.
