The girls basketball season enters the final week before the Chrotmas holiday and the holiday tournaments start next week. I am looking forward to seeing how these teams fare before they get into their conference schedule in January.
Ursuline freshmen Jezelle Banks scored a career high 29 points in their 79-67 win over Bonita Vista High (CA) over the weekend. Banks had a great season last year as an eighth grader and continues to shine in the Raiders first six games this season.
The Conrad Red Wolves are off to a 4-0 start after a pair of wins last week. Junior Eva Walker is averaging 14 points a game to start the season. They face their toughest test this year when they travel to Saint Mark’s on Tuesday night.
Here is the new top 10 of the for this week voted by our Delaware Live Crew.
No. 1 Ursuline (7-1) (LW No. 1) The Raiders, the highest-scoring girls team in the state, went 2-0 at the Diamond State Classic over the holiday. They do not play until Sunday, when they meet Archbishop Carroll (D.C.) in a showcase event in the nation’s capital.
No. 2 Caravel (6-1) (LW No. 2) The Bucs picked up two convincing wins at the Diamond State Classic last week. They’ll host Tatnall on Thursday evening.
No. 3 Sanford (3-4) (LW No. 3) A visit to the Governor’s Challenge resulted in a split for the Warriors. Just one of their first seven games has come against a Delaware foe. That changes this week when undefeated and fifth-ranked Dover travels to Hockessin.
No. 4 St. Elizabeth (5-1) (LW No. 4) The Vikings’ winning streak reached five with two wins at the Viking Invitational. St. E’s gets going in Diamond State Athletic Conference play on Thursday when they host First State Military.
No. 5 Dover (6-0) (LW NR) Dover, with the second-stingiest defense in the state, won two games at the Governor’s Challenge. The Senators play Henlopen North foe Polytech on Thursday before heading to No. 3 Sanford on Saturday.
No. 6 A.I. DuPont (7-2) (LW No. 6) The high-scoring Tigers have been off since before Christmas. Their lone game this week is Thursday at home against Hodgson. They played more games before Christmas than any other team in Delaware.
No. 7 Saint Mark’s (6-1) (LW No. 7) Saint Mark’s kept the good times going over the holiday at the Viking Invitational, earning a pair of victories. The Spartans are home Friday night vs. Tower Hill.
No. 8 Padua (5-2) (LW No. 8) It was all business at the beach for the Pandas during their Christmas holiday. They won a pair of games at the Wildwood (N.J.) Boardwalk Classic. The Pandas host Tatnall on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
No. 9 Cape Henlopen (2-4) (LW No. 4) After a loss at Slam Dunk to the Beach, the Vikings get back to the court this Friday at home against Caesar Rodney.
No. 10 DMA (4-3) (LW 10) The Seahawks lost a trio of games in Florida over the break. They are home for seven of their next eight games, beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. against Wilmington Charter.
