One of Dewey Beach’s most recognizable summer traditions is set to return later this month as The Starboard hosts the 29th annual Running of the Bull on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

The long-running event brings a lighthearted twist to the famous Spanish festival it is loosely inspired by, replacing the serious athleticism of Pamplona with a local, costume-driven beach run that has become a signature summer gathering at the Delaware coast.

The Dewey Beach version, which began in 1997, was created by a group of Starboard patrons who drew inspiration from Spain’s Festival of San Fermín after a night at the popular restaurant and bar. Organizers originally staged the event with a rented bull costume, drawing a small group of participants in its first year. Since then, it has grown into a recurring summer tradition that now attracts hundreds of runners and spectators.

Over the years, the event has evolved into a mix of costumed running, staged performances, and beachside entertainment centered around The Starboard, becoming one of Dewey Beach’s more distinctive seasonal attractions.

This year’s schedule includes a children’s version of the event at 10:30 a.m. at Dagsworthy Street on the beach, followed by the main adult run in the afternoon. Participants traditionally wear white and take part in a beach sprint while being “chased” by a person in a bull costume, followed by additional themed festivities.

Organizers note that the event has also incorporated charitable elements in recent years, with donations encouraged and past proceeds supporting local organizations, including emergency services.

What started as a small, informal gathering has since developed into a longstanding local tradition that continues to draw returning participants each summer.

Additional event details and updates are available through The Starboard and official event information channels.
