DOVER — A Dover resident is smiling a little wider this week after winning $50,000 in the Delaware Lottery’s PLAY 5® day drawing on October 21.

The 69-year-old retiree, who asked to remain anonymous, purchased his winning ticket at The Depot on Forest Street in Dover. The lucky numbers—5, 2, 8, 2, and 5—earned him the top prize.

The longtime lottery player said he has been trying his luck since 1982 and typically buys five tickets at a time, carefully selecting his own numbers. His strategy? A mix of reviewing past draws and trusting his instincts—always including his favorite number, 2.

When he realized his ticket matched all five numbers, the winner said he was both relieved and thrilled. His first celebratory act was a simple one: going out for breakfast.

He plans to use his winnings to pay off bills and enjoy some financial breathing room.

Delaware Lottery Director Helene Keeley congratulated the winner, saying, “PLAY 5® continues to bring excitement to players across the state, and it’s wonderful to see someone enjoy their win in such a simple, joyful way. As always, we encourage everyone to have fun and play responsibly.”

PLAY 5® drawings are held twice daily, at 1:58 p.m. and 7:57 p.m, with ticket sales closing 18 and 27 minutes prior to each drawing, respectively.

Since its inception in 1975, the Delaware Lottery has contributed more than $6 billion to the state’s General Fund, supporting public services throughout Delaware.
