The Friends of Milford Library raised $12,000 for the library in their summer and fall book sale, reflecting what Bonitatibus called “the generosity of the Greater Milford community.”

MILFORD, Del. — Oct. 29, 2025 — Strong turnout at the Milford Public Library’s summer and fall book sales helped the Friends of the Milford Public Library exceed their fundraising goal and donate $12,000 to support new materials and free programs, the group announced — support they say is especially vital to help children build strong reading skills.

“These sales always enjoy outstanding community support, and this season was no exception,” said Linda Bonitatibus, president of the Friends of the Milford Public Library. “We’re deeply grateful to the many volunteers whose time and dedication make these events possible and to every resident who stopped by to shop.”

Bonitatibus said the proceeds will go right back into the library to purchase books and other materials and to underwrite free programs for all ages — including early-literacy story times, after-school activities, teen book clubs and the summer reading challenge. “Reading is one of the most important skills we can give our young people,” she said. “When kids read regularly, they build vocabulary, confidence, and curiosity — and that carries into every subject they study.”

Organized by the Friends, the seasonal sales draw residents from Milford and surrounding communities and rely on dozens of volunteers to sort, set up, and staff the tables. The volunteer effort creates a welcoming, well-organized experience that keeps crowds returning each year, Bonitatibus said.

The Friends of Milford Library had aimed to raise $10,000 this season but ultimately delivered $12,000 to the library, reflecting what Bonitatibus called “the generosity of the Greater Milford community.” She added that community support helps the library expand access to leveled readers, graphic novels, bilingual titles, and homework help tools that meet families where they are. “Libraries open doors,” Bonitatibus said. “Every dollar we raise helps a child find the right book at the right time.”

If you missed the earlier sales, the Christmas Book Sale is scheduled for Dec. 4–6, 2025, offering affordable gift options while supporting local literacy efforts. For details, visit the library’s events calendar at milford.lib.de.us.

“Thanks to the success of these sales and the community’s support, we were able to give more than we planned,” Bonitatibus said. “We look forward to seeing everyone again in December.”
