The gardens of Kathi and Adrian Hunnings were selected as the Garden of the Month for September

The Beautification Committee of the Milford Garden Club selected a  Fork Landing home as its Garden of the Month. Kathi and Adrian Hunnings designed and moved into their house at 19604 Drummond Drive in 2018. Both Hunnings always enjoyed gardening and flowers but having lived in the DC area, Adrian said space was limited so he did container gardening.

Once in Milford to ensure they would have plenty of room to express their love of gardening, they also purchased the lot adjacent to them. This lot is located next to a private walkway that allows the residents of Fork Landing to stroll down and enjoy viewing the brackish tidal water of Deep Branch Creek that flows behind their properties.

Kathi and Adrian have enhanced the path with beautiful landscaping, lining the walkway with a row of yellow mums and adding several garden areas for all the residents to enjoy. Each area is designed to have perennials of various shapes, textures and colors. There is also a crepe myrtle, a willow oak, Japanese Black Pine, a weeping willow, peonies and red velvet foxgloves. Most of the gardens are enhanced by a ring of colorful annuals, currently dragon begonias.

In the spring, they will change the annuals so their garden areas are always beautiful and colorful. One interesting fact relayed by Adrian was that shortly after they moved to Milford, they attended the Bug and Bud Festival and were given a bare rooted maple tree which is flourishing in their front yard.

The Hunnings’ garden is an example of how natural habitats can be added to any yard, something the Milford Garden Club promotes. Adding flowers that are natural pollinators help preserve habitats for other creatures native to the area as well.

Any garden in the Milford area is eligible for recognition as the garden of the month. The homeowner selected gets “bragging rights” for the month and a sign placed in the yard designating their recognition. Recommendations for gardens can be sent to miflordgardenclubdelware@gmail.com. That same email is where to learn about joining the garden club.
