Senior ProtectionMilford Police Department has announced they will offer a Senior Protection Presentation on October 11 at 2 PM in their conference room.

“Older adults are frequently targeted-by scammers over the phone, internet, and mail, and even by trusted caregivers,” Sgt. Timothy Maloney, Public Information Officer, said. “The Delaware Department of Justice Senior Protection presentation focuses on fraud and scams that target older adults and include tips for prevention, as well as advice on how to recover if you or a loved one is victimized.”

According to the FBI, elder fraud complaints rose by 14 percent in 2023, and losses grew by 11 percent.

“Combatting the financial exploitation of those over 60 years of age continues to be a priority of the FBI,” Michael D. Nordwall, FBI Assistant Director, said in the IC3 2023 Elder Fraud Report. “Along with our partners, we continually work to aid victims and to identify and investigate the individuals and criminal organizations that perpetrate these schemes and target the elderly.”

Although the report showed an increase in fraud complaints, the fact is that the statistics could be significantly higher as many of these cases are not reported. The report found that elder fraud resulted in losses of over $3.4 billion in 2023 with the average victim suffering losses of almost $34,000. Older victims are also more likely to be the victim of fraud than younger people.

The Senior Protection Presentation is free to attend. Milford Police Department is located at 400 Northeast Front Street.
