Milford – The Milford Buccaneers hit the six win mark for the first time in six years bringing excitement to Briggs Stadium this fall.
“This was a really nice win, this district we play in is tough from top to bottom and I am really proud of the way our kids played tonight,” Milford head coach Jed Bell said.
Den’Nare Horsey scored three touchdowns to lead Milford beating Sussex Tech 42-13 in a Class AA District 3 game.
The game didn’t start off the way Milford envisioned as the Ravens Zion Roach took the handoff on the first play of the game and raced 69 yards for a touchdown. Matthew Persaud added the kick as Sussex Tech jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
After the opening play it was all Bucs. Horsey scored his first touchdown on a five yard run to cap off a long Milford drive. Horsey converted the two point run giving Milford an 8-7 lead with 4:32 to play in the first quarter.
Milford stretched their lead to 16-7 on Horsey’s 28 yard touchdown run just before halftime.
Charles Shorts struck on the first play of third quarter on a 56 yard touchdown run, Horsey converted the two point run giving Milford a 24-7 lead. On the first play of the ensuing Sussex Tech drive Aston Hudson recovered a fumble at the Ravens 29 yard line. Quarterback John Hudson went to the air on the first play finding Jahmarie Thomas open in the endzone for a touchdown. The extra point try failed and the Bucs expanded their lead to 30-7 in a span of 19 seconds.
Kyle Thompson scored on a five yard run for Sussex Tech in the fourth quarter while Horsey added a 21 yard touchdown run and Elijah Lake scored on a seven yard run for Milford.
Horsey carried the ball 19 times for 153 yards while Shorts gained 117 yards on 13 carries for Milford. John Hudson was five of seven passing for 80 yards. The Bucs amassed 401 total yards in the game.
“We talk to the kids all the time about doing the little things and doing the right things and I think we see that all coming together right now,” Bell said.
Roach went over the 1,000 yard mark for the season while carrying the ball 17 times for 158 yards to lead all rushers in the game.
Sussex Tech fell to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in Class AA District 3. The Ravens will host District leader Woodbridge Friday. Milford improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in District 3. The win keeps Milford’s state tournament hopes alive with two weeks left in the season.
“We want to go 8-2, we will take one week at a time. Next week it is Delmar, that is a tough place to play so we will focus on Delmar and then worry about the next opponent after that,” Bell said.
