Milford School District celebrated School Lunch Week

October 14 through 18 is School Lunch Week and Milford School District celebrated with “School Lunch Pirates:  Find Your Treasure.”  Throughout the United States, child nutrition departments serve over 30 million children each day.

“This will highlight the importance of a healthy lunch to student success both in and out of the classroom,” Laura Schneider, Child Nutrition Supervisor, said. “Research shows that many children get their healthiest meals at school. This week is designed to highlight the nutritious foods offered daily in our schools.”

Many children consume at least half their meals at school and for some, it may be the only meals they eat regularly, according to the Healthy Schools Initiative. In 2012, with a push from then-First Lady Michelle Obama, school lunch requirements shifted to require more whole grains, fruits and vegetables as well as low-fat milk dairy products. Less sodium and fat content were permitted, and portion sizes were adjusted to match what should be served based on grade level.

“Our school lunches offer students fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk, and meet federal standards limiting fat, sodium and calories,” Schneider said. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about the wonderful benefits of our program.”

The National School Lunch Program is federally funded and been fueling students for 77 years. Milford School District, through the Community Eligibility Provision, is able to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students enrolled in the district. Menus are available with nutrition information at the district website. The School Lunch Pirates:  Find Your Treasure campaign was made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association.
