MILFORD — A bigger, faster, stronger, and more disciplined Delmar squad arrived in Briggs Stadium for Milford’s final home game of the season and steamrolled the still-maturing Milford team.

Delmar punted on its first possession — and recovered the ball deep in Milford territory after a muffed catch — but that would be the last time it would punt in the game. Delmar’s high-powered running game scored early and often, getting their first of five first-half TDs and leading 35-0 at the half.

Delmar dominated on both sides of the ball. Milford knew what was coming, but just couldn’t stop it.

Delmar’s offensive line opened huge holes in the middle of a porous Milford defensive front. And they weren’t just short power running plays; they were huge touchdown runs with three over 50 yards.

The 35-0 lead at halftime meant the second half would start with a running clock.

Milford’s only serious drive would come after halftime as junior quarterback Rahlier Rankin drove the Buccaneers deep into Delmar territory. Milford had a first and goal from the two-yard line but couldn’t score on four straight plays as the Delmar defense stiffened.

It was Senior Night for Milford and the team’s youth was evident as only six seniors — Drew Brozefsky, Imer Gonzalez-Velasquez, Amare’ Matthews, Brian Seward, Jayden Sykes, and Levion White — from a roster of 44 were recognized.

Coach Jed Bell offered high praise for the seniors’ character.

“These guys were part of a small group as the program is rebuilding,” he said. “They led by example. They came to practice and play every day. they are a strong and special group who have grown from boys into young men. I am very proud of the people they are becoming.”

The loss leaves Milford at 4-5 with just one game left in the annual Battle of the Bell at Lake Forest, which is 5-4 and battling for a playoff spot.

“We have to put this game behind us and get ready for the last game of the season,” Bell said. “It is the last game of the year and it’s against your biggest rival. We need to get ready for Lake Forest to bring their A game.”
