The Milford Police Department has teamed up with CVS Pharmacy to provide the community with a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of unused, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs in a Drug Collection Unit. The Drug Collection Unit has been placed within the lobby of the Milford Police Department.
Although medicines play an important role in treating health conditions, they should be disposed of with care to avoid harming the environment and to prevent overdoses or errors. Taking expired or unneeded medications to a disposal unit also keeps them away from children.
According to Delaware Public Health, 70 percent of those who abuse prescription pain relievers get them from friends or relatives and one in five high school students have abused prescription drugs. The Environmental Protection Agency has also detected pharmaceutical drugs in the water supply.
There are regulations for disposing drugs at the collection site. No liquids, aerosols, lotions are sharp objects can be placed in the collection unit. What can be placed there are prescriptions, including patches, medications and ointments. Over-the-counter medication, vitamin samples as well as medication designed for pets are also accepted.
