Local musician Junior Wilson has been a well-known figure in Milford for decades. The owner of JrWilsonMusic, Wilson has been entertaining fans throughout the East Coast, getting his start with steel guitar which he played in church with his friend Lonnie Watson starting in 1955. On January 30, Wilson was carrying two guitars he had been working on up the stairs from his workshop when he fell and struck his head.
His wife, Bonnie, treated his wound which was bleeding and the couple continued with their evening until Wilson began to slur his words and he was taken to the Emergency Room. Surgery was performed the next morning at Bayhealth Sussex Campus before he was transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus to be closer to the surgeon. He underwent rehabilitation at St. Francis Hospital before being sent home to Polaris Rehabilitation Center in the Milford Wellness Village where he was released sometime later.
Seizures and tremors still plague him after his fall requiring him to return to the hospital multiple times for treatment. As a result, his medical bills have grown significant and he took to social media to ask for donations, something that broke the heart of Tina Rambo, Manager at The Palace and Surf & Turf.
“He wrote on Facebook to his friends that if any of us could help him out, if we could put it funds right in his account or donate through one of the other apps, it would be appreciated,” Rambo said. “Well, that just broke my heart right that had to be so hard for him. I felt so sorry for him that he had to do that. He used to play at the Surf & Turf for me, and he plays at the Palace. I knew we had to do something.”
The benefit will be held on the Palace deck from 1 to 5 PM on Sunday, September 15. The entertainment includes Greg Ellingsworth, Sky Brady, Kathy Martin, Double Agent, Everett Spells along with Tricia and Matt.
“I don’t know yet what the musicians will do, whether they are each doing an hour set, will be playing together or what,” Rambo said. “I know that they wlll put together something really nice for Junior because they have all worked with him in the past. There will be a tip jar there and any money placed in the jar will be given to Junior.”
In addition to the tip jar, Rambo stated that 50 percent of all proceeds from that day at the Palace will be donated to Wilson. The donations begin with lunch and run until close of business that day.
“We hope a lot of people come out to hear some great music on the deck and support this wonderful local musician,” Rambo said.
