Holiday HelpThe holidays are a time when many families come together to celebrate with gifts, comfort foods and laughter. However, for some, the holidays may not be filled with pleasant memories. Domestic violence and suicides increase during the holidays while many are dealing with grief, loss or homelessness.

On average, police interventions related to domestic violence rise by 20 percent in December compared to other months of the year. There are several causes that may lead to the increase of abuse during the holidays, including financial stressors and increased use of alcohol.

There are national hotlines available for those who are dealing with domestic violence, substance abuse, mental health problems or suicidal thoughts, but there are also local organizations who provide 24 hour per day, 7 day per week assistance.

People’s Place offers their SAFE program that asssits families who have fallen victim to domestic violence. The program offers bilingual counselors as well. For more information, call 302-422-8058 or visit https://peoplesplace2.com/services/safe-old. This is also where suspected child abuse can be reported.

Victims of sexual assault, whose incidences also rise during the holidays, contact 1-800-262-9800. This program is operated by ContactLifeline and provide trained counselors who are trauma survivors themselves. The National Crisis Hotline, operated by RAINN can be reached at 1-800-6565 HOPE (4673).

For some, the holidays are a time of loneliness, whether they are away from family or have lost a close family member. If this is leading to suicidal thoughts, call, text or chat 988 to connect with a trained crisis counselor.

Anyone dealing with loss during the holiday season also has options for assistance. Grief Share, a national organization, offers information on grief and loss support groups in the area. Delaware Hospice also offers grief and loss support groups. Contact them at 302-478-5707 or visit them online. Smile Through The Storms is a support service for survivors of suicide; the ones left behind due to the loss of a love one to suicide. Learn more at www.smilethroughthestorms.com

Homelessness, although difficult any time of the year, can be especially difficult during the holidays. One way to assist those who have found themselves homeless is to volunteer at a food kitchen or shelter during the holiday season. Local groups like Milford Advocacy for the Homeless offers several services aimed at helping the homeless in the area. You can reach them by calling 302-217-3106, email [email protected] or online.
