NEW CASTLE — Top-ranked Salesianum jumped out to a big early lead Saturday against the William Penn Colonials and cruised home to a 30-13 victory over the home team.
The Sals led 16-0 after the first quarter and took a 23-0 lead into halftime.
Salesianum Quarterback Brady McBride found Noah Mix for two touchdowns in the first quarter — both from five yards out. The Salesianum defense also scored a safety by preventing William Penn’s punter from getting off a punt in his own endzone. Aiden Lego then scored on a 30-yard run in the second quarter.
After the two teams traded interceptions in the third quarter, the Colonials finally got on the scoreboard when Quarterback Josiah Everett hit Mason Lowman on a deep pass for a 60-yard touchdown. With Malaki Morgan’s extra point, Penn narrowed the gap to 23-7.
Salesianum answered a few minutes later as McBride threw his third touchdown pass of the day, hitting Robbie “RJ” Johnson across the middle of the endzone for a seven-yard touchdown. After a third successful extra point from Sebastian Hess, the Sals extended their lead to 30-7. Penn eventually tacked on another touchdown late in the fourth quarter when Everett ran in a 3-yard keeper, but the extra point was blocked, making the final score 30-13.
The first-half deficit proved too much for the Colonials to overcome, as they were also unable to take advantage of quarterback McBride’s four turnovers.
Salesianum will face off with its most formidable in-state opponent next Friday night in a highly anticipated game against second-ranked Appoquinimink, who is coming off a 49-0 win over Saint Mark’s.
William Penn has another tough opponent next week when they host third-ranked Middletown in New Castle next Saturday.
