Delaware State Police recommends how to protect your vehicle.
SUSSEX COUNTY, Del. — Delaware State Police are investigating a recent spike in vehicle thefts from residential driveways across western Sussex County, with multiple incidents reported over the past week.
According to police, the thefts have primarily targeted Kia and Hyundai models, including both unlocked vehicles and those that were locked and taken without keys. The latter has raised concerns among investigators that thieves may be using advanced tools or exploiting known vulnerabilities in certain vehicle models.
Several thefts and attempted thefts are currently under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 4 Criminal Investigations Unit.
“This does not appear to be random or purely opportunistic,” police said. “The ability to remove locked vehicles without keys suggests an organized effort.”
While police have not released specific neighborhoods, the incidents have been described as occurring in residential driveways in the western portions of Sussex County, often overnight or in the early morning hours.
State police are urging residents to take additional precautions and to remain alert as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information related to the thefts is asked to contact Detective K. Perry at 302-752-3793 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
