A recent study found that sports tourism in Delaware contributed significantly to the state economy in 2023. According to the survey, sport tourism accounted for $258 million in the First State. The survey was conducted by Tourism Economics, a leading research organization.
“This study proves something that we already knew that sport tourism is a major factor in our state economy,” Governor John Carney said. “When travelers come to our state to attend tournaments, races and other sport-related events, whether they come as players or spectators, they create jobs, support our small businesses and grow the economy throughout our state.”
Although direct spending was $257.9 million, business sales in the local economy were $403.2 million, the study found. These sales supported over 3,000 jobs and generated $20.2 million in state and local taxes. Visitors purchased food and beverages, transportation, recreation accommodations and spent money in retail locations. In addition, the study included cost of tournament operations, including wages, sports equipment, insurance and more in funds spent locally.
“When teams come to our state, they bring spectators and family. Those visitors engage with local businesses,” Jeff Bullock, Secretary of State, said. “From dining and accommodations to recreational activities, players and those that come with them support local businesses and drive growth in our state.”
Recently, the Delaware General Assembly have initiated more ways to grow sports tourism in the state, including creating the Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund, which provides support to new or existing sports facilities that attract out-of-state businesses.
“There is no question Milford benefits from sports tourism,” Jo Schmeiser, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Milford, said. “Our hotels, restaurants and shops see many visitors who are here for a sporting event. We look forward to see the continued growth of sports tourism throughout our state and especially in the greater Milford area.”
