Week three brings the matchup we have all been waiting for, the top teams in the Henlopen North and Henlopen South as the undefeated Delmar Wildcats visit the undefeated Smyrna Eagles on Tuesday Sept. 26. Both were State Champs in their respective divisions last season. I suspect these two will play for the Henlopen Conference Title at the end of October. Other teams to keep your eye on this week are Cape Henlopen, Milford, Polytech, Newark Charter, and Caravel.
Game of the Week:
D2 Delmar at D1 Smyrna Tuesday Sept. 26 4 pm
Here is the current Top 10 for Delaware Live-302 Sports
Division 1 Field Hockey
No. 1 Smyrna 4-0 After the Eagles flew over the Cape Vikings it set their next biggest matchup with D1 State Champs Delmar. No one has tamed the Wildcats in years so while the task is daunting the Eagles are up for the challenge. Sept. 26 vs Delmar, Sept. 28 at Sussex Central.
No. 2 Cape Henlopen 5-1 Cape picked up two more shutout wins this week with their only loss to Smyrna. Next up @ Indian River Sept. 26 and home against No.3 Milford Sept. 28 for the Morgan’s Message Game. Morgan’s Message strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics.
No. 3 Milford 5-0 The Bucs battled at Sussex Academy to remain undefeated. They face Woodbridge at home on Sept. 26 and will be tested again when they go to Cape Henlopen Sept. 28 at Champions Stadium under the lights (6 pm start for Morgan’s Message Game).
No. 4 Polytech 4-1 The Panthers lost to Cape Henlopen but rebounded to beat Woodbridge. They face a tough Sussex Academy team who will look to get back on track after a 4-3 loss to Milford then they go on the road Sept. 28 at Sussex Tech.
No. 5 CR 3-2 The Riders dropped both games this week to Smyrna and Lake Forest. They get some rest this week, only playing one game at home Sept. 28 against Dover.
No. 6 Charter School of Wilmington 3-2 After splitting the week 1-1 Charter stays at home this week to take on Tatnall Sept. 26 and Conrad Sept. 28.
No. 7 Middletown 4-1 The Cavaliers picked up two more wins and will only play one game this week but will be challenged by D2 No.2 Newark Charter at home on Sept. 26.
No. 8 Padua 3-3 Life for the Pandas doesn’t get any easier this week as they face off as the home team but in two different stadiums. They will see Catholic rival St. Mark’s at the Chase Fieldhouse on Sept. 26 and travel to Abessinio Stadium to face Caravel in a Friday night game Sept. 29 at 6:45 pm.
No. 9 Odessa 4-1 The Ducks continue to improve on their record as a relatively new program they are finding their fair share of success. They have just one game this week Sept. 27 on the road at Concord (Maplezone PA).
No. 10 (Tie) Sussex Central 3-2 and Appoquinimink 2-3 It was too hard to pick the number ten this week as both teams have been in and out of the top ten so far. Central had a great week beating Sussex Tech 4-3 in overtime and it’s the first time in 15 + years the Knights have defeated the Ravens. Central will look to keep their winning ways Sept. 26 at home vs Laurel, they will have a tough one on Sept. 28 vs Smyrna and play St. Andrew’s at home Saturday Sept. 30. Appoquinimink had a tough start dropping their first three games and got on the board with two wins this week. They will face Newark Friday Sept. 29 at home.
Division 2 Field Hockey
No 1. Delmar 5-0 The Wildcats will face the D1 State Champs and undefeated Smyrna Eagles in the Game of the Week on Tuesday Sept. 26. There will be one less undefeated team in field hockey after this one. We will see Jordyn Holloman and Dru Moffett, two of the top players in the state, go head to head. Delmar also has Lake Forest Sept. 28.
No 2. Newark Charter 5-0 The Patriots had two more shutout wins this week and will look to stay undefeated atMiddletown Sept. 26 and home against Conrad Sept. 28.
No 3. Caravel 5-0 The Bucs have only allowed one goal in their five games and that was the first game against Dover. Since then they have had 4 shutouts, credited to GK Addison Van Rensler. Caravel travels to the Auks of Archmere Sept. 26, then home vs Sts. Peter and Paul (MD) Thursday Sept. 28 before traveling to Abessinio Stadium to take on the Padua Pandas Friday night Sept. 29.
No 4. Concord 4-1 The Raiders split the week 1-1 and will rest up this week only playing Odessa Wednesday Sept. 27 at Maplezone (PA).
No.5 St. Mark’s 3-1 The Spartans play three this week due to the makeup with St. Elizabeth’s Monday @ Chase Fieldhouse. Regularly scheduled games Tuesday vs Padua at Chase Fieldhouse and make the long ride Saturday to Sussex Tech.
No 6 Archmere 3-2 The Auks continue to battle as each week presents a different challenge in their schedule. This is why at 3-2 they come in one place above the Indians who are 4-1. Strength of schedule is in the Auks favor. Sept. 26 they host Caravel, Sept. 28 they host Agnes Irwin School (PA), and Sept. 30 they host Wilmington Friends as a makeup from Sept. 8.
No.7 Indian River 4-1 Torrie Huk has her Indians on the move at 4-1. They have a huge hurdle Tuesday at home vs Cape Henlopen then face Laurel Sept. 28 at home.
No 8. Tatnall 3-1 Tatnall beat Tower Hill head to head 3-1 this week to improve to 3-1. They go to Charter School of Wilmington Sept. 26 and come home to play the St. Andrews School Sept. 28.
No 9. Sussex Academy 2-3 The Seahawks had a tough week and went 0 and 2, dropping games to Delmar and Milford. If they are going to stay in the hunt, they need wins at Polytech Sept. 26 and home vs Seaford Sept. 28.
No. 10 Tower Hill 3-1 The Hillers dropped to Tatnall and it does not get any easier for them this week. They play two games: 1 on the road Sept. 28 at Wilmington Friends and host Cape Henlopen on Saturday Sept. 30 at Richardson Field.
