Education does not need to stop during the summer months. Kids and adults alike can learn about the environment, conservation and ecosystems through programs at DuPont Environmental Education Center and Abbott’s Mill Nature Center.
On August 9, Dupont Environmental Education Center will offer beach combing at 9 AM. Those interested should meet at the Slaughter Beach Pavilion, located at 329 Bay Avenue, where they will learn about the many forms of wildlife along the Delaware Bay.
“Rattle whelk eggs, learn about mermaid purses, track ghost crabs and more,” Todd Klawinski, Director of Education, said. “You can find all sorts of evidence of life on our beaches, and even in our waters, just by taking the time to look closely while you are out on a stroll. Our naturalists will teach you what to look for and how to identify what you found.”
On Tuesday, August 6, celebrate Moth Night from 8 to 11 PM and enjoy what the naturalists call the “butterflies of the dark.” The program is a nocturnal survey of moths at the center where, using blacklights and a vapor lamp, moths are attracted to “mothing stations” where they can be viewed, photographed and identified for an iNaturalist Biodiversity project. This program is led by Jim White, retired Director of Land and Biodiversity. Capacity is limited and the cost is $15 per adult. A discount is available for members of the Delaware Nature Society.
The Knee High Naturalist Program at Abbott’s Mill returns on Wednesday, August 7 from 10 to 11:30 AM. Designed for preschoolers and held every Wednesday, the program is designed to educate young children on the beauty of nature. The theme for August is “Wings” with discussion about pollinators and migration.
“This season will be full of hikes, observations, and fun learning activities for kids 2-5 with a parent. Discover the wonders of nature with your little one,” Mike Valenti, Director of Abbott’s Mill, said. “Enjoy hands-on nature discovery outdoors and led by Wendy Scott.”
Pre-registration required and ends 24 hours prior to the event. All programs will be conducted fully outside, rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. Led by Wendy Scott. Cost is $15 per person with a discount offered to nature society members.
