LEWES, Del. (Aug. 5, 2025) — Voters in Delaware’s 20th Representative District are heading to the polls today to elect a new state representative to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Stell Parker Selby, who resigned in June. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Though special elections typically generate lower turnout than general elections, political observers emphasize that their outcomes can be highly consequential.
“A single vote today could determine who represents Milton and Lewes in the General Assembly—on issues ranging from education funding to emergency services,” said Daniel Willis, Sussex Country Regional Chair of the GOP. “In elections like this, every voice truly matters.”
Why the Election Matters
Today’s vote will decide who will carry forward legislation and constituent services in a district covering key parts of eastern Sussex County. A prolonged vacancy can delay progress on critical issues such as health care access, infrastructure development, and emergency response.
Lower voter turnout also means each ballot carries more influence.
“Your vote counts more in a special election,” Daniel Willis said. “This is your chance to make sure your neighborhood’s needs are heard.”
Candidates for the Seat
Nikki Miller (R), a Milton resident and longtime educator, is a former principal of Cape Henlopen High School and currently serves as Supervisor of Instruction for the Seaford School District. She holds a doctorate in district leadership from Wilmington University.
Miller’s campaign focuses on bipartisan problem-solving, support for educators, improving quality of life, expanding health services, and responsible infrastructure development. She previously ran for the same seat in 2024 and narrowly lost to Parker Selby.
Alonna Berry (D), Executive Director of the Delaware Center for Justice, is a former senior policy adviser to Gov. John Carney and the state’s first trauma-informed care coordinator. She has emphasized community outreach, education equity, and restorative justice in her campaign.
Berry’s priorities include supporting local businesses, listening to constituents, and working across party lines to address budget challenges.
Polling Information
All registered voters who reside in the 20th District and are at least 18 years old may vote, regardless of party affiliation. Voters are encouraged to bring photo ID. Those without ID may still vote after completing an affidavit of identity.
