The 54th Special Olympics Delaware Summer Games was held at the University of Delaware over the weekend, with more than a thousand athletes and Unified partners competing in six different sports at this year’s games.

This year’s competitions included swimming, track & field, bocce, tennis, softball, and powerlifting.

Although organizers were disappointed they were not able to finish all competitions on Saturday due to dangerous air quality from the New Jersey wildfire smoke, they are thankful that Friday’s competitions were successful and impressed with the incredible turnout and high spirits.

“Thanks to our amazing coaches and volunteers, Special Olympics Delaware was able to provide our largest Summer Games ever with over 1,100 participants,” said David Halley, president and CEO of Special Olympics Delaware. “We are proud to be able to continue to offer our programs completely free and we look forward to serving even more athletes in the years to come!“

Outdoor competitions on Saturday were cancelled, but indoor activities continued with Powerlifting and Bocce completing all competition.

Tennis was also able to move indoors to Elkton Indoor Tennis.

Requests to interview the athletes that competed over the weekend were denied.
