Indian River schools closed for special election; 4 poll sites

Georgetown Elementary School is one of the four schools in Indian River School District to be used as a polling place.

Indian River School District, in the heart of Delaware’s 37th House District, will be closed for a special election in a few weeks.

The district announced the closures Tuesday, citing that Delaware law requires public schools to be closed if they are being utilized as polling places for state elections. 

Last week, Rep. Ruth Briggs King, a Republican representing the 37th District, announced her resignation from the General Assembly.

Briggs King was the only Republican woman in the state legislature. 

The seat vacancy triggers the election, which will be held on Thursday, Dec. 21 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. 

“All IRSD employees should not report to work on this day, with the exception of custodial staff designated to oversee those schools being used as polling places,” the district said in a statement.

Four of Indian River’s 14 school buildings will be used as polling places.

They are:

• North Georgetown Elementary School
• Georgetown Elementary School
• Sussex Central High School
• Howard T. Ennis School
