In a fortunate twist of fate, incoming Milford junior Rhalier Rankin has found a new home with the Milford School District, presenting him with an exciting opportunity to join the Buccaneers’ athletic program. Last Thursday, during physicals and equipment issuance, Rankin shared his positive experiences with his new teammates. “It’s really been a great summer for me. It’s been a lot of fun getting to know my teammates; they are a great bunch of guys. They have been very welcoming, and I really appreciate that,” Rankin stated.

Rankin is expected to play a significant role on both sides of the ball for the Buccaneers’ upcoming football season. Throughout the summer, he has been busy in the weight room and participating in 7-on-7 football, getting acquainted with his new teammates and learning Milford’s offensive system. As a quarterback who has primarily worked out of the shotgun, Rankin faces the challenge of adjusting to playing under center, a key component of Milford’s offense.

Head coach Jed Bell expressed his satisfaction with Rankin’s performance thus far, particularly noting his skills and adaptability. “He has a very strong arm and looked good during seven-on-sevens. While making the adjustment to playing under center is a challenge, he has been up to the task. He is very teachable and has a positive attitude; that’s something you can’t teach,” Bell commented.

In addition to his role on offense, Rankin will also contribute as a defensive back—a position that presented challenges for Milford last season. Rankin is confident in his ability to make an impact on defense. “I really enjoy playing defense. I’ve worked very hard on my skills on that side of the ball and believe I can make a difference,” Rankin said. “We have a lot of good guys in the defensive backfield, and we’re all working together to make sure everyone knows each other’s job.”

The transition to southern Delaware can be challenging for anyone, especially a high school student. However, Rankin has embraced the change and appreciated his new surroundings. “Things are a little more spread out here, but everyone I’ve met has been very nice. I’m really appreciating the coaching I’m getting; it’s a very positive environment here, and I really like that,” he remarked.

When asked about academics, Rankin was quick to express his enthusiasm for math. “I’ve always enjoyed math; it makes sense to me and is a lot of fun. I work hard in all my classes, but math is so much easier—it’s like having a nice dessert after a good meal.”

Rankin won’t be the only quarterback on the roster. Junior Cayden Jarett will also be transferring in from Early College School @ DSU. Jarett, who is also a defensive back, has been splitting reps with Rankin, creating a supportive and competitive environment. “We really support each other, and that’s important. Whoever is quarterback, the other player is supporting them. That’s what makes teammates better. At the end of the day, it’s about being a good teammate and playing the best we can,” Rankin concluded.
