Remote teaching and learning has not stopped this year’s graduating classes, and the Milford Rotary Club will be offering $12,000 in scholarships to this year’s graduating seniors.
“We were able to provide these scholarships due to the generosity of the Rotary Club members and the many sponsors of the Rotary Flags for Heroes fundraiser,” said Jim O’Neill, the Rotary Educational Foundation Coordinator. This year the Club will offer four types of scholarships: Traditional, Warnell, Garbutt Family Trust, and a new one the “Service Above Self” scholarship.
The club will offer Three $2,000 Traditional scholarships which will be judged on the criteria of the student’s leadership, character, and citizenship as well as academic achievement.
A $2,000 Warnell scholarship will include the requirement that the student is planning a career in science or mathematics.
One $2,000 Garbutt Family Trust scholarship has the requirement of the student majoring in business, science, or education. The student must also show financial need. This scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years depending on funds. The club is also renewing one $2,000 Garbutt scholarship.
The new “Service Above Self” scholarship is also for $2,000 and is being funded by Rotarian Jack Donovan. In addition to the basic criteria, this scholarship will look for exceptional community service and will give a preference to members of the Interact Club. Service Above Self is the motto of Rotary International.
All scholarship applicants must reside in the service area of the Milford Rotary Club which includes all of the Milford School District. Graduating seniors in public, charter, parochial, or private schools or home schooled seniors must submit their applications by April 20, 2021.
The Warnell scholarship is named after the late Joseph Warnell, a long term Rotarian, chemist, and former business owner. The Garbutt Family Trust scholarship is named for the late long time Rotarian and Milford business owner Thomas Garbutt and his wife and daughter.
