Delaware State Police have arrested 41-year-old Travis Newkirk of New Castle, DE on firearms charges following an investigation that began on Saturday morning in the New Castle area.
On July 30, 2022, at approximately 3:10 a.m., troopers responded to the Quik Stop Mini Market located at 531 East Basin Road in New Castle regarding a disorderly subject. The ensuing investigation revealed that a male subject had entered the store and became involved in a confrontation with two other individuals inside of the business. During the dispute, the male suspect pointed a handgun at the two other subjects before fleeing the scene. Troopers began canvassing the nearby area in search of the suspect, and when a trooper attempted to contact a male matching the suspect’s description, the male began running away. Troopers gave chase and were able to take the male suspect, identified as Travis Newkirk, into custody after a Taser deployment. Newkirk did not seek any medical attention, but he displayed signs of impairment at the scene. Troopers also recovered a loaded Taurus handgun near Newkirk’s person. Computer checks of Newkirk revealed that he was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing a firearm and/or ammunition.
Newkirk was transported to Troop 6, where he was charged with the following crimes:
- Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
- Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
- Resisting Arrest
- Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence
- Disorderly Conduct
Newkirk was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court # 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $8,550 cash bond.
