Bug & Bud Festival brings vendors, music, food and family activities to the city’s historic downtown district for over 50 years.
Bug & Bud festival has become Milford’s unofficial kickoff to spring — a day when the city’s history, businesses, and families come together in celebration of community.
MILFORD, Del. — One of southern Delaware’s most recognizable spring traditions will return to downtown Milford next month as the Bug & Bud Festival brings vendors, music, foo,d and family activities to the city’s historic downtown district.
The annual event, organized by Downtown Milford Inc., will take place Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., transforming downtown streets into a full-day celebration of spring and community life.
The festival will feature more than 100 vendors, food trucks, live entertainment, children’s activities, and local businesses open throughout downtown, creating a lively environment expected to draw thousands of residents and visitors.
“Bug & Bud is one of those special days where our entire community comes together to celebrate Milford,” said Sadé Truiett, coordinator of Downtown Milford Inc. “From our incredible local businesses to the families who travel from across the region to join us, it’s truly a celebration of community, springtime and everything that makes Milford so special.”
Celebrating Delaware’s State Bug
The festival traces its roots to a unique piece of Delaware history.
The event began in 2004 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the ladybug becoming Delaware’s official state bug. That designation dates to 1974, when second-grade students at Lulu M. Ross Elementary School successfully petitioned the Delaware legislature to adopt the ladybug because of its agricultural value.
Ladybugs help control harmful insects that damage crops, making them an important ally for farmers.
Today, the festival celebrates that story while also highlighting Milford’s connection to nature and the arrival of spring.
A Full Day of Family Activities
Organizers say the Bug & Bud Festival is designed to be a family-friendly event for all ages.
Highlights scheduled throughout the day include:
- A Bug & Bud costume parade, featuring participants dressed as insects, flowers and other spring-themed characters
- Kids and family activities and interactive entertainment
- Live music and performances throughout the day
- Food trucks and festival fare
- More than 100 vendors offering crafts, local products and community information
All downtown shops and restaurants are also encouraged to participate, creating a festival atmosphere throughout Milford’s historic commercial district.
Supporting Downtown Milford
For Downtown Milford Inc., the festival is more than a community celebration. It also serves as one of the organization’s biggest opportunities to promote small businesses and attract visitors to the city.
The nonprofit works year-round to support economic vitality, historic preservation and community engagement in Milford’s downtown area.
Festival organizers say events like Bug & Bud help showcase the district while encouraging residents to explore local shops and restaurants.
Getting Involved
Admission to the festival is free, and the event will take place rain or shine.
Organizers are still accepting vendor and sponsorship applications, with a deadline of March 15.
More information about participating or attending the event is available at downtownmilford.org or by calling 302-393-6808.
For many residents, the festival has become Milford’s unofficial kickoff to spring — a day when the city’s history, businesses and families come together in celebration of community.
