Live music is always a popular family activity, even in the heat of the summer. Delaware State Parks encourage everyone to bring a picnic dinner, a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy some of the free concerts they offer in local state parks.
On Friday, July 19, Killen’s’ Pond State Park will feature Ginger who will play rock, Motown and funk starting at 6:30 PM. A professional guitar and vocal due from Lewes, Ginger performs acoustic versions of music from the 1960s through today.
The music at the park continues on Friday, July 26 when the park will feature Diamond Jazz Swing, bringing “cool jazz for cooler cats.” Known as an upscale, vintage, cocktail jazz trio focused on jazz standards as well as ballads, bossa and blues, Diamond Swing Jazz travels throughout the Delaware and Philadelphia region, performing at festivals, restaurants, wineries and more.
On Friday, August 2, Mother’s Highway Junction takes the stage at Killen’s Pond. Featuring Michael Miller, a recipient of a Delaware Artist Fellowship for his musical talent in folk art.
“American folk music and songwriting has space for original, meaningful work, so it just seems natural to me to write these songs,” Miller said upon receiving his fellowship. “There are yet some good songs to find and occasionally some get to the point in the stream where I am, and I get to land one.”
Inspired by Arlo Guthrie and other talented folk-rock musicians, Mother’s Highway Junction will play many of the songs their audience members will recognize from the genre.
Smooth Sound Big Band will be the featured performers on Friday, August 9 at the park. Part of the Milford Community Band, the Smooth Sound Big Band performs music from the Big Band Era through Classic Rock and Jazz. The band consists of professional musicians, former music educators and amateur musicians.
The concert series at Killens Pond ends on Friday, August 16 with the Honey Badgers. A folk duo consisting of Michael Narrin and Erin Magnin who named the duo more for their own amusement than a statement of any sort, their sound has been likened to The Civil Wars and The Swell Season. Offering intense, unique harmonies along with undeniable onstage charm, the Honey Badgers spin stories as they entertain.
All concerts at Killen’s Pond State Park are free, although the park entry fee is in effect during the summer months. For information about concerts in other state parks, visit https://destateparks.com/concerts.
