Fortunatas Bakery Story

Ribbon Cutting at Fortunata’s Bakery

Milford, DE — Fortunata’s Bakery, a beloved local bakery in Milford, marked a milestone on March 26 as it celebrated its 10th anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the Milford Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Archie Campbell, and many loyal customers.

Owned and operated by Ruth Clifton, Fortunata’s Bakery has become a cherished fixture in the community, known for its traditional Italian hearth-baked breads, rolls, and sweet treats. Clifton, who has over 15 years of baking experience, apprenticed under Armand Argenio, a fourth-generation Italian-American baker, when the shop was formerly known as Bread and Butter Bakery. After Argenio’s retirement, Clifton took over the business, preserving the traditional methods while adding her own modern touch.

“The name ‘Fortunata’ actually comes from a stray cat that used to hang around the bakery,” Clifton explained. “Armand named her Fortunata, which means ‘luck’ in Italian. The cat had a feisty yet sweet personality that put a smile on everyone’s face, and I wanted the bakery to embody that same spirit.”
