Traffic Stop Leads to the Arrest of Two Subjects for Weapon Charges

Delaware State Police have arrested 19-year-old Alex Weakley and a 16-year-old juvenile male both of New Castle, DE for weapon charges following a traffic stop early Friday morning.

On November 25, 2022, at approximately 1:04 a.m., a trooper on patrol in the area of Pulaski Highway (Route 40) and South College Avenue (Route 896) observed a Honda Civic traveling with a concealed registration plate.  A traffic stop was initiated, and contact was made with 4 occupants inside the vehicle. Immediately upon contact, the trooper smelled an odor of marijuana. The occupants were asked to exit the vehicle, and during a pat-down of the 16-year-old juvenile (front passenger) and Alex Weakley (rear passenger), they were discovered to have handguns tucked in their waistbands. Troopers located a .45 caliber Sig Sauer handgun on the juvenile. Furthermore, a computer search revealed the Sig Sauer was reported stolen by New Castle City Police Department in October.  Troopers discovered a 9mm Glock on Weakley’s person. Additionally, troopers discovered approximately 3.75 grams of marijuana in the vehicle.

The operator of the vehicle was charged with possession of marijuana (civil) and a traffic citation.

The juvenile and Weakley were taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 2 where they were charged with the following offenses:

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm if Previously Convicted of Two Violent Felonies (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Felony)

Weakley was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court # 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $15,000 cash bond.

16-year-old juvenile

  • Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Under 21 (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Receiving a Stolen Firearm (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Felony)

The juvenile was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court # 11 and committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on a $10,000 secured bond.
