The new RAVE notification system is designed to inform residents what to do in emergencies similar to this flood in Wilmington a few years ago

In an effort to improve communication during emergencies, the City of Milford has implemented a new system from RAVE technologies. The decision to use the new notification system was, in part, due to recent devastating hurricanes in other areas of the country.

“The safety and well-being of our residents is a top priority,” City Manager Mark Whitfield said. “With the increasing frequency and intensity of storms, it’s vital that we have a reliable communication system in place to keep everyone informed during emergencies.”

The new notification method will allow the city to directly notify residents about critical information during an emergency. This includes power outages, flooding or other threats. Because Milford is close to the coastline, are extremely important to the safety of residents, Whitfield explained.

The system was tested last week, generating several questions on social media. Several people deleted the notification in fear it was SPAM. Some reported when they clicked on it, they were taken to a blank screen. Leslie Vincent, a retired information security instructor, commented on a local social media group that the email was legitimate.

“RAVE is a legitimate emergency alert system used by many cities, towns and businesses,” Vincent commented. “The site is legitimate and when you click on it, you are not asked to enter any information, it is only validating it reached a workable email.” Janet Christina Gillespie confirmed Vincent’s comment, stating that they used the system at emergency dispatch in Sussex County.

Residents receive an email with a return address of [email protected] if there is an emergency. The email will include vital information and could contain instructions on safety measures that should be taken. Residents who have received an email should click on the link to confirm the email address. Those who have not can sign up by clicking here.
